Indian Dahl Recipe

Homemade Dahl Recipe Ingredients

  • 400grs red lentils or mung dall
  • 2-4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 inch root ginger peeled and chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies deseeded and chopped finely
  • 2 tbsp of vegetable oil
  • 1-2 small onions sliced thinly
  • 1 tbsp of turmeric
  • 1 ½ tbsp of cumin seeds
  • ½ tbsp of black mustard seeds
  • ½ tbsp of chilli powder
  • Handful of fresh coriander washed and chopped

Preparing your Indian Dahl Recipe

Wash the lentils until the water is clear, drain and put into a large pot cover with water and bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer removing any scum from the surface

Add the turmeric, garlic, ginger and chillis to the pan

Simmer the mixture until the lentils have become soft and creamy in texture, the length of time varies depending on the age of the lentils.

You may have to add some hot water if the mixture becomes to thick, it is down to the individual as to what thickness they like.

How to make the Tarka

While the lentils are in the final stages of cooking, heat the oil in a frying pan until fairly hot, add the onions ( I sometimes like to add a sliced garlic cloves),

Fry until brown and starting to crisp, add the spices and cook until the mustard seeds pop (take care that they do not pop out of the pan).

Pour most of the onions and spices over the lentils and stir, when you serve it top with the rest of the onions and herbs

You can serve this Indian lentil recipe with rice or as a Indian side dish with any Indian Curries you like.

Its a versatile dish which is also a suitable healthy vegetarian recipe.

How to store Indian Dahl

You can store lentil dahl in the fridge for 3 days maximum.

We always aire on the side of caution when it comes to storing leftovers in the fridge.

Bad bacteria builds up and can make you very ill. The food may look and smell okay..., just don't risk eating it after 3 days.

Can you freeze Lentil Dahl?

Yes you can freeze Dhal.

I tend to use clear plastic containers with an air tight lid. The type you get a takeaway meal in. Just wash them thoroughly.

We pop them in the dishwasher which completely sterilizes them.

I hope you enjoy this dahl recipe.Healthy Eating will give you many healthy benefits too!
